Spoiler warning!
Ok, to start and remove half of the replies: Nihilium + SKgaming 's new guild lol. yes, porbadly, but I am talking about lore-characters
Seeing encounters like Illidan and Kil'jeaden I think it is very likely some npc will be there when you are killing Arthas, and possibly will kill him in some sort of final cutscene. So, who will be the lucky one to get to kill Arthas or help the players in the fight at least?
---
My 2 cents:
Likely characters
Tirion Fordring
Current wielder of the Ashbringer, and leader of the only orginazation (argent crusade) that combines the strength of the Horde and the Alliance and therefore seem to be the only orginization that stands a change of defeating the Lich King. Also, Tirion is arguably the only cool paladin in WoW lore.
Darion Morgraine
The Ebon Blade leader, heir to the Ashbringer, and has very personal reasons to kill Arthas. He knows the scourge inside out too.
Tirion Fordring & Darion Morgraine
If one of these will be in the fight the other will probadly be there too. Seeing the battle for light's hope where Darion Morgrain hears his father say something like "one day you will wield the ashbringer and be imba" and Darion says right before he trows the Ashrbinger to Tirion "that day is not now", it is implied that one day Darion Morgraine will wield the cleansed Ashbringer and be imba. Possibly during the fight Arthas kills Tirion, Tirion trows the Ashbringer back to Darion who can now wield the Ashbringer to its full potential becouse he has redeemed himself.
Sylvanas
Arthas destroyed her homeland, slaughered tons of elves, forced her to become his slave and damned her to be undead for the rest of her excistence. She has vowed to kill Arthas, and I can see her doing htis
Muradin Bronzebeard
I havent done the ally quests so dont know much about this, but he is alive, and possibly feels guilty about helping Arthas in his last moments, and therefore having helped create the Lich King. Maybe he wants to set things right
Possibly Sylvanas helps horde raids and Muradin helps Alliance raids?
The Burning Legion: Mal'Ganis, Varimathras & ...
In the battle for undercity it is clear tht Varimathras was just a puppet. We don't know who his leader is, but either it was Arthas being very fancy on trying to get horde and alliance apart (I dont see Varimathras helping Arthas tho) or it was a demonlord. Now I dont think Varimathras is dead now, Dreadlords are like roaches, you just can't seem to kill one, they always come back.
Mal'ganis is alive and well, and lead the Scarlet Onslought in their quest to kill both the scourge and the free races of Azeroth. He seems to be very bent on vengeance against Arthas, but I don't see him doing anything solo. Somebody had to tell him that the Scarlets were a bunch of easilly persuadable emo's. I think Mal'ganis and Varimathras serve the same leader, and that possibly is:
Sargeras! according to WoWwiki he is in limbo seaching for a body powerfull enough to bear his great will and power. Now Arthas is quite the though guy indead, and possibly right before he is slain Sargeras will take over Arthas' weakend body.
Less likely characters
Varok Saurfang
Revenge for the loss of his son, and becouse he is totally imba
Varian Wrynn
revenge for Bolvar, and becouse he is imba too
EDITS:
Arthas Menethil
Now I know that Tirion kills his heart, but really, an heart is just something to pump blood, it doesn't really do anything. Anyway Arthas was a strong champion and defender of humanity right up to the point where he picked up Frostmourne and his soul was taken. He was very tormented by the horrors he saw being done to his people, and was willing to give everything for "the power to defend his people". Now suppose this: somehow in the figth, where the Lich King is imba strong and the raid + whatever npc's around are loosing, Frostmourne is broken by the Ashbringer. When this happens every soul is released, and Arthas' soul returns to him. He realizes what he has become, and get's struck in a mental conflict with Ner-Zhul, somehow he gives the players and npc's a chance to kill the Lich King.
Illidan Stormrage
It's fantasy after all, and he wont be the first to miracously come back from the dead.
Jaina Proudmore
Had a lot to do with Arthas back when he was still human.
