I've played since release and have 79 epic quality items of various levels that took me a very long time to accumulate, plus other items from quests, one time world events and holiday events. Take some of the BWL and AQ40 tier items, we spent weeks and weeks learning those encounters just as a lot of people did.
I have fond memories of outbidding other party members for some of that gear and being passed the items from raid leaders. Some of those people are no longer with us and only exist in memories. I look around my bank with great fondness and sometimes put on the old gear for nostalgia.
There items from epic quests that can't be done again. I don't want to sell these items for 2g, they're worth a lot more that that to me in sentimental value.
I spent a lot of time in TBC making 20 slot bags for a bit more space, so that option is out the question. Why should it even have to be an option?
Why can't I keep my old gear? Why must I be forced to sell it?
