Remember hunters in the pre-tbc content patch, and paladins? BOTH classes said they were completely fine but they weren't. They both got nerfs. Admittedly, those nerfs (especially to paladins) should have been sorted for level 70, as they then suffered the consequence of being un-viable for some content patches.
Warlocks, Shadowpriests and Paladins in season 1 & 2 would not admit that they were overpowered within certain setups. Nevermind the fact that people HAD to have shadowresist gear to beat them, they wouldn't admit it. Gear scaled and things changed a bit (although warlocks remained really damn good).
Then Resto druids came along as the new top healers, of course none would admit they were overpowered. The standard line was "learn to adapt and learn to play", not easy when the class your fighting has so many ways to escape, spammable undispellable CC and instant heals.
Then in recent patches, melee became extremely powerful. Rogues started to dominate combining melee damage with insane CC and escape abilities. Warriors would not admit warrior+druid was overpowered, rogues would not admit they're overpowered.
Obviously, this is happening again now. However the annoying barrage of "ret lol" threads isn't my point. There are two things I'm trying to get at:
Nerfing classes before the expansion could really leave them weak at max level. Blizzard have already said that any changes they do make will be done carefully.
and Finally:
When one person makes a whine thread and gets shot down, it can generally be ignored. When hundreds start making and posting within specific threads about specific classes, then theres a good chance something is up. Sure, you can respond "l2p", but really, you think out of those hundreds of people there aren't a few that are actually very competent players?
People get very defensive over their own class, but I think in ALL of the cases above and now, it would make the forums so much better if there could be some serious discussion about balance as opposed to countless players insisting that "we're not overpowered, we're fine" and countless more insisting otherwise. It's completely unproductive, and in most cases the majority not only win, but are usually right.
P.S. I really hope ret doesn't get nerfed like it did in TBC.
