The problem is not AFKing, it's only the effect of it.
People AFK because the current pvp system is simply not fun. People hate losing, everyone does. Simply losing in a fair fight is one thing and can even be fun, but for most people it's unbearable to lose while you have virtually no chance of fighting back. It is the nature of humans. This is the reason why so many people whine about Twinks and Premades, although I don't consider them a problem.

The problem is with the balance. I'm not talking about rotating overpowered classes every 2 months and buffing/nerfing classes. The whole system is wrong down to the core, and it can never be fixed by small nerfs and buffs to certain classes.

The rock / paper / scissors balancing is lousy, annoying, and wrong, wrong, wrong for any MMORPG.

RPS is a way to balance strategy games, not RPGs. In the RTS genre players can scout ahead, anticipate the strategy of their enemies and counter it with "Scissors" units to their "Paper". It is viable because both players are free to choose their units, and the player who can read the mind of their enemies better will win. Back to MMORPGs. You have no way to anticipate the classes you will face. You face random teams in Arena and you have no way to "scout ahead" and counter your enemy. Once the game starts the teams are set, and more often than not the game is already over.

Let's see the ideal scenario. Both teams are equally geared, skilled and make no big mistakes. Which one should win? If the game is well-designed then the team which outsmarts the other one should win. This only ever happens in mirror games. If there are different classes then the rock/paper/scissors system will decide the outcome, not tactics or strategy. This is less obvious in larger teams simply because it's unlikely that everyone in your team will face their counter-classes, but painfully obvious in 2v2 and 1v1 encounters.

But that's fine, because Blizzard said that PvP is not balanced in 2v2 and 1v1. Is this acceptable? HELL NO. It is their fault for choosing a lousy system that's completely useless for MMORPG PvP as an attempt to balance classes. It is completely unacceptable to hide behind the RPS system (that worked fine in Starcraft, but not in WoW) as an excuse of not balancing pvp.

Even though this is a team based game, small scale pvp is important. Very important. The idea behind group pvp, teams of 5-40 people fighting each other is fun. However, the larger the teams the less personal it is. 2v2 and especially 1v1 encounters are a very personal experience. Throughout history duels, the battle of two souls, were very important for people. Countless movies, poems, songs describe the relationship between two people waging a one on one fight. You can call it e-peen if you want, but this is something that can ruin the game for anyone with a little pride. Yet, this is completely ignored in this game. Ideally, two people of equal skill should have exactly 50% chance of winning with any two given class. I'm not asking to achieve perfect balance. But 90%-10% chances are the proof of lousy balancing.

A game should be fun, above everything else. If every class automatically loses against 3 classes, has a somewhat fair fight against 3, and dominates 3 then it's statistically balanced. It works very well in a strategy game where you can anticipate the choice of your enemy and use the appropriate counter-unit. But you cannot change class in an RPG from one battle to another. You are stuck with what you chose, and only luck will decide if you're going to win your next encounter or not (considering equal gear and skill).

Winning over someone who has no chance against you is not fun. Losing against someone who beats you because of your class is even less fun. If Blizzard achieves perfect RPS balance then people will have a fair fight roughly 33% of the time, against 3 classes out of 9 and have an unbalanced fight 6 times out of 9. I don't care if you consider this statistically balanced. THIS IS NOT FUN FOR ANYONE. Unless you change pvp at its roots people will keep AFKing, will keep using cheats and hacks in Arena. They will keep dodging queues in BGs and Arenas so they will not meet their counter-classes. Because anyone who just wants to play instead of dodging queues in Arena will lose hundreds of points in an hour, especially at the higher ratings.

PvP in WoW is no longer a fun game. I don't even need evidence supporting this because it's everywhere around us. 20 people AFKing in every AV is the strongest evidence I would ever need for PvP not being fun anymore. It's a second job where you grind honor points and arena points for epic gear. People grind gear because they expect the game to be more balanced once they have pvp gear. It's not, and this is the most disillusioning in all of it.

People have several alts because they are sick of being paper. Have you ever noticed how Warlocks reroll Rogues, Rogues reroll Warriors, Warriors reroll Mages and Mages reroll Warlocks? People will keep rerolling hoping that the next class will be better or more powerful because it keeps owning them as their scissors. It took me leveling 5 characters to 70 to realize this.

Some people still think that others complain because they want easy mode and win against every class in any situation. NO! Winning easily is just as boring as losing to your counter-class. People keep rerolling because they want to play a class that has a decent chance against everyone. But there is none. In this system, every class is destroyed by some other classes, and it's just down to pure luck if you face them or not. Every class forum is full of whines. Not (only) because of immature people, but also because this system is simply not fun for anyone. People would start pvping again instead of afking and dodging queues if every class had a decent chance against any other class. This is the only way to balance a MMORPG, not RPS.

PvP is dead in this game, and will remain a chore and a pain, a soulless grinding of gear until drastic changes are made. This kind of balancing failed in EQ, and it killed pvp in WoW. A series of nerfs and buffs of classes is not enough. I, no, We, PvPers, demand a complete revamp of the system. Rock/paper/scissors HAS to go. Preferably along with Kalgan, if he is unable make PvP fun again.

Hint: Epics is not the way to go. Making people grind battlegrounds for gear will only make them leech honor if the game itself is not fun to play. Back then, before the Battlegrounds, we had epic fights in Hillsbrad. People did it for the fun of it, not the gear, and everyone loved it.

Gear cannot ever be the goal of a game. The goal of the game is having fun. Gear should only exist to give a meaning for the battles. The easiest way to test if a game is fun or not is to remove the rewards. If people play the game for the game itself, then you're doing a good job. If honor rewards and arena items were completely removed, how many people do you think would play PvP? Yeah.

Back at 60 i enjoyed pvp alot, I could raid which is fun and then do PvP with my new and hard earned gear.
Now at 70 everyone got RESILENCE which is by far the worst addition to this game, now we have to choose if we want to do PvE or PvP, and gear and spec differently for each.

PvP is totally unbalanced and boring now at 70, and the PvP gear is WAY too easy to get!
So I chose to only do PvE now until PvP is fixed.

PvP is broken blizzard, wake up sometime and remove the damn resilence!
