Q u o t e:
Most guilds formed in wotlk are just pugs that just call themself guilds.
Never in wow history have guilds form/disband as fast as they do now days. Seen guilds that recruit people and ask "min 5k+ gs to join" or "have this and that achi", so how are these different than pugs that ask gearscore or link achis? Not much, they might have scheduled raiding times and some form loot rules like dkp which favours these who make loot deals (scam their own so called guildies).
These guilds aren't communities or groups of friends having fun, but group of people who need each others to satisfy their need for new purple pixels. They aren't raiding with friends for fun and even slight "unfairness" in who get what pixels can set up drama that you would never see in most pugs.
Well it is nothing new that there are guilds that are purely formed for the purpose of progression and acquiring loot, but that is not necessarily a bad thing as there is room in the game for guilds of all kinds.
People play this game for many different reasons, and people tend to group up with other people who are like themselves. Some people are just not interested in social guilds, so I can see how it can be liberating for those who are only interesting in acquiring loot to create or join a guild that has been formed for this very purpose. When joining such a guild, one does not need to feign interest in other aspects of the game in order to gain access to desirable loot... the fact that these guilds often fall apart due to super-greed or loot disputes is a whole different story :-)
It is worth mentioning again that it will be even more interesting (as well as more advantageous) to be in a guild once Cataclysm has been released, as there will be more tools available for building and maintaining a strong fellowship:
