Heirloom in cataclysm [with new races]

"Bornakk, for example, stopped by a thread asking about how heirloom items will work post-80 in Cataclysm. He said that there are no plans to extend the experience bonus they give past level 80, though there may eventually be new heirlooms available to help bridge that gap. That's not surprising, really -- if they were extended, heirlooms would essentially be mandatory for the people racing to get to 85 first, and that's a situation Blizzard would like to avoid.

Interestingly, he also noted that it's "unlikely" that heirlooms won't work on Worgen or Goblin characters, which is admittedly a relief, seeing how I just bought a set of them for my Worgen Warrior. Battle Howl, anyone?"

Our answer was always steadfastly "We have no current plans for this" when asked about Faction change, too. It's true the items do say 1-80 in-game currently, but they may simply be showing the current minimum and maximum levels in the game.

However, it may well be that the tooltip remains true once the expansion launches. It would be a shame if there was a feeling that everyone either everyone had to have the heirlooms to get through to 85 that little bit faster, or for us to extend the experience needed from 80-85 by 20% in the assumption that somehow most people had the Heirlooms.

Let's wait and see what happens. Until the plans are much clearer, or the expansion is actually live and we're able to see how the Heirlooms work in it, I'd personally be a bit cautious in buying experience boosting Heirloom items in advance, just for the hope that they do work from 80-85.

This isn't unreasonable and we did something quite similar with the Tome of Cold Weather Flight, so it's not totally out of the realm of possibility.
