There are indeed some upcoming changes to stats in Cataclysm, and we have many of the changes summarised in the Items section of this stickied post:

I'd like to add a little further insight into this change. It comes down to being able to establish a good item from a bad item without calling upon the powers of an external source or tool.

At present, the majority of players will call upon a list of BiS items, or an external tool or resource in order to work out which item of two will benefit them more. Which ever item gets approved by said tool or resource gets used, and the other discarded or banked for a rainy day. This is what we want to avoid.

We want to see players able to make the choice using the information presented in the tool tip, without having a crisis. This is not to say that is has not been possible for some players to do this, but those that can look at an items stats and know off the bat (without a great deal of research outside of the game) which item is best were certainly amongst the vast minority.

Q u o t e:
The change is completely idiotic.

Every caster, healer with have 100k mana just stacking intellect for spell power. Making areana last forever.

Getting rid of stats like spell power + attack power is gonna be your worst mistake. Its gonna ruin the game,
Speculation will only give you a head ache. :) If you have thought about the fact that this would happen, I assure you the development team has also, and it will be worked out accordingly.

Seriously - what about 600 spell power weapons?
What about them?

Q u o t e:
Well if we're going to be having intellect only give spell power now, then surely we'll need 300 intellect on the wepaons to compensate
Q u o t e:
Spell Power: Spell Power is being removed from items as well. Don't panic, we'll be improving Intellect so that it provides mana and Spell Power.

I will never run out of mana >:)
Warriors tend not to have mana problems, don't worry about it. :)

don't bully me :< i'm only asking a question
My apologies if you felt I was bullying you. My troll alarm kicked in, and I was unfortunate enough to bite. A misinterpretation I guess.

I believe that most people can look at two items and in most cases say which one is the better for them.
Some, yes. Most, no.
