The common process when you get a position that involves an avatar is your submit a few names you'd like, and a few ideas for an avatar you like. Back in the day I submitted a few names, including Drysc, which became my name. I also submitted a bunch of avatar ideas, but one of them was "One of the Felwood trees with the face." and I suppose the concept tickled the team so much that it was the immediate winner.

As for why I even submitted it as a choice in the first place... I would always just stop and admire the concept while leveling through Felwood. They're like a fun Halloween decoration or something.
