What is local.dat file?

What is the local.dat file? I’m having issues with game crashes, particularly graphics driver crashes, and I see some suggestions are to delete the local.dat file. What exactly am I deleting?

The error message I get 99% of the time is the following attached.

I noticed another thread recently opened up with virtually the same problem as me, but this user was running Windows Vista 32-bit. I am running Windows 7 64-bit. I also have the latest Nvidia update. This game ran fine up until March or so. The error has come and gone, but recently it happens more and more, so now I want to really get it fixed. I know how to navigate computers very well, but I hardly know a thing about the hardware, so I don’t know what information is necessary to help, or where to find this information.

Thanks.

Hi Soccerspeed,

The local.dat has all local information for the client, in-game settings, for example. Usually deleting this file and following with a repair is a good first step for client crash issues.

In your case, with the specific error message that you’re getting, this sounds like your issue may be your GPU drivers. Could you please provide your system specs, maybe even a DxDiag?
