Hopefully this information can help someone more knowledgeable than myself, and hopefully it can help the devs out.
I’ve said this in other posts, but I want to reiterate – all issues that people are currently experiencing with tgupdate running on launch and the trading post not loading are related to Mavericks and some issue it is obviously casuing with the client.
I’m still running Mountain Lion and the game starts up normally WITHOUT running tgupdate and both the trading post and gem store load fine.
What does this mean for you? Well obviously this means that if you have access to the disk or install files of a previous version of OSX you should be able to create a second partition and install GW2 through there. I understand that this is by no means an ideal solution but for those who are having serious problems and just want to be able to play this is definitely a valid way to do so.
If that is the road you wish to take until Arenanet is able to fix the current issues with Mavericks then this guide shoudl help you out:

It’s for doing the opposite – running Mavericks on a separate partition, but the instructions will work for the reverse, so all you have to do is open Disk Utility, create the second partition (remember you will need enough space for both GW2 and the OS, that means AT LEAST 30-40GB), run the installer files and install to the second parition.
Proof that Gem store and TP work:
