Finding out character name

My son has forgotten his password for his account, went to reset it and its asking for character name.

I have his account name but the character name was just something random. Anyway I can find out what it is

Seems crazy to have all the details and need something so random as that to be able to reset it

Quacthulhu is right, Cannonfodder, you need to open a ticket to Customer Support, providing them with as many details as possible about this incidence and your son´s Gw2 account, so they can help you to resolve this.
