Confirmation from new WvW Staff on T8

We knew that Habib told us there was a meeting about the tier 8 matchup and ranking problems. Well, since he stepped down we no longer know for sure that this issue is being looked into. I think we’d like a confirmation from our new WvW director (I like you more than Habib already btw) that the tier 8 ranking problem is being looked into AND will be resolved soon. We’d definitely like an ETA on when a fix will be pushed out or what ANet is planning to do.
Please don’t pull a Habib on us and force me to send more cookies! (I might just send even more if you pull through for us)

I’ll have more info once Habib gets in, but we are going to bump the ratings of the tier 8 teams to attempt to partially address this today. That’s not going to stop things from sliding back towards the current state, so there will be discussions about larger changes that are necessary to address this issue. But for now we are just going to juke the stats, as they say.

If the server populations for the T8 ones are Very High as the lists suggest, the problem is that not many people on those servers are attracted to WvW.. And you should look at options on how to make it more attractive to a bigger populace of players.

Unfortunately, there could be many reasons that those servers are doing poorly, including that people stay away because they are doing poorly. Creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. This change will help only a little because it isn’t going to actually change the skill level of any servers, we are just going to mess with the numbers to try and fix the impacts their scores have had on everyone else. There are more holistic changes that will need to be made to try and solve this problem for the long term, but we can do this today, so we are.

Hi Devon,

Thanks for helping T8 out.

I do have a question for you. I’m on Gate of Madness, which is currently set to be Red Team on T7. Should we be expecting to be in T8 after reset? Or will it take a week at the higher rating before SF breaks out?

Thanks

It would appear that the change we are making will impact the ratings for the next matchup. I do not know specifically who will end up where, but it is likely that SF will break out and someone else will drop. If not this week, then likely the next.

Remember that this is merely a band-aid solution for now. One that will hopefully return some movement between T7 and T8. For it to be permanently solved will require more work and time. But, this should make things better for now.

How is this throwing GoM under the bus? I’m just curious, because even if they normalize t8, you still have a week to not come in third place again.

But that’s the thing, according to Devon the ratings bump might be enough to drop them down tonight.

So the key here is that if we do this correctly, then they will be able to get out of T8 by kicking tail. There are other underlying problems here that are more complicated to fix, but the change we are making should make it more likely that there is some movement between T7 and T8 on a regular basis, rather than the way it currently is. As for throwing anyone under the bus, this is still based on how you perform in the current matchup. The only way to get dropped down to T8, is to have done poorly in T7.

SF isnt getting out on their own steam either. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/deus+ex+machina

Uh…yeah, we know! We should have been able to get out of T8 on our own steam a LONG time ago (1/4 of a year of domination is simply too long). But due to how Glicko works and how skewed the ratings were in T8, there was simply zero chance of us getting out of T8 on our own steam without some sort of adjustment to the ratings.

So why should T8 NA get special treatment? Why not a universally applied answer? As an academic and a historian you should know that giving a minority special treatment is not a solution.

The biggest reason is that the solution is to attempt to break up what has become an ossified matchup. It is hardly a solution to the underlying problem, but it will hopefully put some variety back into the T8 and T7 matchups in NA which were sorely lacking in that because of the rating system we use for matchups.

Can we see what was changed? I didn’t see anywhere anything official, but would love to know….

(Theory: Adjusted ET/FC server rank so SF didn’t lose server rank points this last week like it was slated to)

I’ll have the updated matchups and rankings posted on Monday. I, unfortunately, don’t have access to the data from home.
