If you intentionally avoid the first quest and helping you still get credit for helping, XP for helping, and the guards are still impresses having "never seen anybody fight like that". Less a bug and more just being silly. Still gives you the check mark.

It also sounds like it is super boring as you are literally standing still watching NPCs deal 1 damage at a time to enemies :)
