Why can you enter Rifts now without keys?

I haven't played for a while, I just started back again after a year and a half. I noticed bounties weren't dropping Rift Keys and it said they were useless and that I should sell them for gold.

Why did Blizzard remove needing rift keys to enter rifts? What is the purpose of bounties now?

Bounties drop materials used for Kanai's Cube and I think also crafting legendaries/sets with the blacksmith. You do need to run bounties.

And yes, sell your old keys :)

Quoting for blue. :) Bounties now reward legendary materials used in both crafting and for Kanai's Cube. We have a more thorough explanation of the Cube, which was added in Patch 2.3.0, in our Game Guide.
