The follower from Act 3 Diablo 2? Wasn't he a spell caster that wore chainmail, not a melee guy?

No, they were mercenary spellswords - The Iron Wolves. They also appear in act 2 of diablo 3... same group of mercenaries.

Indeed! The hireling you're referring to in Diablo II is an Iron Wolf, not a Crusader.
