how do AU Servers work on different regions?

The way I think of it is that the AUS server is a sub server off the US server. If you live in Aus/NZ or even some of SE Asia i think you should connect to the Au server automatically.

So you will still choose the Americas in the server selection on battlenet app. If you choose Asia or eu you will connect to their server.

Thats correct. The Australian servers are set up so players from this region select Americans and will automatically be routed to Australian server hardware. If you wanted to try the Australian servers from outside of the region you would need to follow that link supplied above. Basically the shortcut will force your game to route to a specific server.

Keep in mind that your characters are part of the Americas region so can only be played on Americas and Australian hardware.
